Congratulations to the winners of the first ever Thermador Canada Kitchen Design Contest! The entries below showcased the best in Canadian kitchen design and Thermador’s capabilities in the modern kitchen.

Grand Prize Winner - Awarded $20,000 in Thermador appliances
Kenneth Ho, BiglarKinyan Design Planning

For many of our clients, their kitchens are the hearts of their homes and go-to places for friends and family. Unfortunately in the case of this house, the old kitchen had many short-comings - functionally and visually. Although the homeowners’ kitchen was large and open, the generic layout meant that when people gathered, they would impede work flow and those who stayed out of the way in the dinette felt disconnected. Lack of good storage and shortage of usable counters were other issues.

When we began designing, it became clear that the layout of this kitchen had to change. We began by sketching a custom waterfall bar that would be a hangout, for sitting, for leaning on, for homework and most important, orienting everyone towards the kitchen. Next thing we did was to relocate the cooking area in order to create a zone permitting continuous work flow. We were also motivated by the added benefit that anyone in the cooking area would be facing the windows and able to enjoy the forest the kitchen overlooked.

The new kitchen, now occupying some of the redundant circulation area in the dinette was much larger, allowing us to utilize much larger Thermador appliances to support the needs for a gourmet kitchen.

As for aesthetics, we aimed to create a bright space with a neutral palette that would complement the views out. Our solution was to utilize white upper cabinets to create a sense of lightness and a rustic wood grain for the base to celebrate the natural feel of the forest behind. Appliances were also positioned to balance the rest of the finishes and contribute to the gourmet kitchen look we were trying to achieve.

The resultant kitchen space is being enjoyed every day by the homeowners, their friends and family.

First Runner Up - Awarded $10,000 in Thermador appliances
Nima Ahmadi, Pionova Studio

For the Glass House, the challenge was to bring the beautiful ravine backyard into the kitchen and family space. We fulfilled the client’s desire by creating a sleek and contemporary kitchen with a dramatic U-shaped island that acts as a gathering space for the family.

Second Runner Up - Awarded $5,000 in Thermador appliances
Emilie Lavoie, Signe-Carre

The warmth of wood, the purity of white, the strength of stone and the elegance of glass. Contemporary yet modern, this kitchen is the result of a bold mix of materials that complement each other beautifully. The objective was to calm the senses and create a positive space, with all elements coming together in a perfect balance of contrast and subtlety.

A continuous fine straight line divides the kitchen and prep areas. Every face of this interior space was developed simultaneously, so as to create a single, elegant room. Subtle but effective lighting showcases each element.

The line created by the island – the centrepiece par excellence of all modern kitchens – is made evident by the colour, shapes and textures projected onto the wall by the sink, and the drop ceiling. The island also doubles as a table, complete with sliding stools, for casual meals and light conversation with friends, while providing much-needed storage space.

The dining room, which opens onto the prep area, is designed with the same idea in mind, to bring everything together into a single, coordinated space.

This was a practical yet elegant design in response to a complex request from the client, who wanted a highly functional kitchen made with high-quality, robust materials.
