5 WONDERFUL WINDOW TREATMENT IDEAS FOR THE MODERN KITCHEN

Compared to windows in the living room, bedroom and bathroom, kitchen windows are often left bare to benefit from the views and exposure to natural light. Window coverings aren’t always the most practical solution for kitchens where fabrics can be damaged by grease, odors, spills, and splatters that require regular cleaning but by choosing the right style and type of material, a kitchen’s aesthetic can benefit greatly from adding simple window treatments where appropriate.

TIP: For kitchen window coverings, be sure to use flame-retardant fabrics, especially for windows located near an open flame or stovetop.

If you’ve been living with bare kitchen windows and want to add a touch of personality and style that will soften the hard lines and edges in your kitchen, check out these creative window dressing designs that are as practical as they are pretty for any style kitchen.

To help control the temperature in the kitchen without blocking out the natural light, Designer Alyce Lopez dressed the tall window over the kitchen sink in a semi-transparent, flat roman shade in light-diffusing washable linen. When privacy isn’t a concern it’s not necessary for the shade to unfold to the bottom of the window, exposing it to splashes from the sink. The neat folds of this design makes it a classic unfussy treatment for a modern space.

The best kitchen window dressings take into consideration the size and style of your window, your kitchen’s decor, and your needs. If you like the look of curtains you might want to cover your patio doors or other floor to ceiling windows with full-length draperies as show here. They match the semi-transparent linen roman shade over the sink. Full-coverage drapes or curtains will help save energy by providing temperature control to keep your home warmer in winter and cooler in summer and offer privacy.
